OLD THRILLER FILM 1930'S?

There are a couple living in a old Mansion which has a portrait of the same mansion and drive on the living room wall...

They notice a dark ghostly figure in a long black monks habit has appeared in the Painting.. and it starts moving nearer to the front door, at the end of the film, they look at the painting, and the 'figure' is on the doorstep, and they hear knocking at thier own real front door....

it was shown (i think) on Ch4 England in the early eighties.

Perhaps you are thinking of Night Gallery's "The Cemetery" starring Roddy McDowell and Ossie Davis. Maybe you saw this pilot episode on an old black and white TV.

The first episode of Night Gallery (1969) is essentially a back-from-the-dead revenge narrative, except that all of the supernatural interference takes place on one painted canvas. After greedy Roddy purposely hurries his sick, rich uncle’s death so that he can claim his fortune and move into his mansion, he finds himself beset by the old man’s angry spirit, or at least the image of him, rising from the graveyard next to the house in the likeness of the mansion hanging on the wall next to the main-hall staircase. Yet the painting doesn’t move before his eyes; rather it alters slightly every time Roddy takes a peek at it, the risen ghost getting closer and closer to the front door, until…there’s a knock.
