Are we in a post-atheist age?

Is the term atheist now no longer meaningful? it implies a relationship to religion, i.e. one doesn't believe in God, whereas for most people these days nobody really cares. As long as no religious nutcases are trying to force their religion on you, most of us can go about our lives without worrying about whether there is a God in the same way as you don't go around describing people who don't believe in Father Christmas as axmasists.

Somewhat. I live in north-western Europe and I didn't run into the term "atheist" till well into puberty. It may sound weird, but I remember to think of myself as "normal" with some people having some weird beliefs.

I fully hope this will become the norm in the coming generations.

And yes, the term "atheist" will lose it's meaning. But we aren't there yet, at least not on a global scale.

Many people come to understand that there can be no real meaning or purpose in life unless there is a Creator. They understand that purpose and worth go together and that a life without purpose is not a life worth living. So then the question is whether they will seek the Creator or just use self-deception to convince themselves that an invented purpose is real.

That's true of many countries in Europe and East Asia, but in other parts religion is still deeply entrenched

Since you are posting this in the religious section of YA, I would say that you are still acting in relationship to religion. If you weren't, you would post this in the psychlology section, or perhaps in the hamster section.

I am a Christian, so I must be a stupid ******? Is that the question? I am an atheist, so I must be real intelligent, is that the question? Leave Father Christmas out of this!

No - look what quran and religion of peace has to say about that (and muslims MEAN that)

2.39. But those who reject Faith and belie Our Signs, they shall be companions of the Fire; they shall abide therein.

    2.161. Those who reject Faith, and die rejecting,- on them is Allah.s curse, and the curse of angels, and of all mankind;

2.190. Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.

2.191. And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have Turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.

2.192. But if they cease, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

2.193. And fight them on until there is no more Tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah. But if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression.

2.216. Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not.

2.244. Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things.

2.257. Allah is the Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light. Of those who reject faith the patrons are the evil ones: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (For ever).

3:28. Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah. except by way of precaution, that ye may Guard yourselves from them. But Allah cautions you (To remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah.

3:110. Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors.

3:118. O ye who believe! Take not into your intimacy those outside your ranks: They will not fail to corrupt you. They only desire your ruin: Rank hatred has already appeared from their mouths: What their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made plain to you the Signs, if ye have wisdom.

3.141. Allah's object also is to purge those that are true in Faith and to deprive of blessing Those that resist Faith.

3.151 Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority: their abode will be the Fire: And evil is the home of the wrong-doers!
