You have to convert AVI to DVD format first. I don't know anything about Nero, but if you use something like "convertxtodvd" You add your file whatever format and it will convert and burn to dvd in about an hour. There is a trial version available which at least will show you how easy it is to use, but will leave a watermark. If you know how to download movies getting the full version shouldn't be a problem.

Hello, avi is a media container format which can be encoded with many different codecs, such as divx, xvid, rle, mjpeg, etc, according to my experience, both nero and your downloaded dvd burner program only support few special codec avi files well, so you met this problem, I think you'd better use a right program to help you, and you should note, if you want to play the bured dvd well on DVD player, you'd better use a right program to convert the avi movie file to video dvd format then burn to DVD, because most DVD players only recognize video dvd format well, you can follow me to use RZ DVD Creator, it supports any formats/codecs avi files well, it can convert any formats/codecs movie files to video dvd format and burn to any DVD disc, such as convert any codecs avi movie files to video dvd format then burn to a dvd, easy to use, insert a DVD disc into your computer dvd burner drive, run RZ DVD Creator, select the dvd burner drive as the target folder, drag and drop the avi movie file into the program, then press the START button, you will get a right video dvd that can be played well on the DVD players, you could yahoo or google search and download RZ DVD Creator, hope it could help you.

try to download 'avs video converter', put the file in and it has an option for changing it to "dvd format", and you can just burn it with that program also.
