Is nutritional yeast the same as brewer's yeast?

It is an ingredient which seems to be in a lot of recipes but I have not been able to find it anywhere, but I have found brewer's yeast on the holland and barrett website. Is nutritional yeast the american name perhaps?

Update:

Yes but why can't I find it then? What does it look like? What brand/what kind of packaging? Can someone give me a UK link?

Update 2:

It's not for baking bread it is for flavouring and nutrition. It is often used by Isa Chandra Moscowich in her recipe books, but she is American that is why I was wondering if it has a different name over here.

Wow. I can't believe the confusion here. Nutritional yeast is a culture grown from sugarcane and beet molasses, very high in protein and B-vitamins. Brewer's yeast is totally different. Don't make the mistake of buying that and using it in place of nutritional yeast. (I unfortunately made that mistake when I first became vegan and did not know about nutritional yeast.)

The wikipedia entry is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutritional_yeast

I and millions of vegans have been eating it for years. It has a nutty cheesy flavour and comes in both powder and flake forms.

A UK link to some brands is here:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss/280-81805...

You can make great "cheesy" sauces with it, for use on vegan pizza, vegan lasagne, and vegan macaroni and "cheese", for example. You can also sprinkle it on foods, like you would do with parmesan cheese.

    See: http://veganpizzaplace.com/nutritional-yeast

    I hope this helps.

Nutritional yeast is still yeast, but brewers yeast, ahem, comes form brewing ale!! So, the brewers yeast is usually a softer, thick black tacky substance which is delicious , such as MArmite or plain "brewers yeast" in a pot. Nutritional yeast is made by the fermanetation of sugars ( same as any yeast making) in fruits like beet, sugar etc. In turn yeast is formed in that yellowy brown granule substance. Sometimes you'll get flakes ( lovely as munchy food) or nuggets.

YEast is yeast, but it does come from any fermentation and in the ale or beer making process you get that dark smooth tacky substance, the other yellowborwn stuff is when other foods with sugars ferment.

Either way, they CAN both be used for savoury flavouring. They can't both be used to make TVP nuggets or ingredients in veg burgers. If you used marmite for that, you'd get a pretty sick tasting soup textured veg burger! It is basically the same product in everything except texture, rather like orange juice and pulp, and a whole orange.

I get nutritional yeast in huge packets, very cheap from a local Thai market, and yes I eat it straight from the packet like cereal. It's also a complete protein.

UK you can find it any good asian shop, like a chinatown place. Id avoid Holland and BArrett simply because they will charge a ton for something very cheap.

Another way of using something for recipes is to make your own gluten. It involves a very easy method but takes a while- rinsing wheat flour over and over til you get a big lump of gluten in the middle, you boil it, to make gluten, which is tangy in taste, and you can use it like fried gluten steaks, or marinate it. I love the stuff, it's very easy to make just takes a while to rinse the flour clean.

FOr nutritional yeast it might be cheaper to order from USA if H&B are too pricey.

I'd look into whichever chinatown area is nearst you, they won't have a website, and the shops won't either, well, maybe. That is always where I've found it easily. Thai, CHinese, INdonesian.

No, nutritional yeast and brewers yeast is very different.

Most health food and some bulk stores will carry nutritional yeast.

Years ago nutritional yeast was the same as brewer's yeast. They both meant inactive edible yeast taken as a dietary supplement.

Lately, many people are experimenting with using LIVE brewing yeast to bake bread.

I need to see the recipe to say which one they meant.

For the disbelievers, follow the link. See the label that says, "Dietary supplement."

Other brands have it as powder.

See if you can find Torula yeast.

They are not the same. Nutritional yeast is not an active yeast. It cannot be used for baking.

    -----------------------------------

Nutritional yeast is grown on enriched purified cane and beet molasses under carefully controlled conditions. T6635, with the addition of vitamin B12, is an ideal vegetarian support formula and has an appealing cheese flavor. It can be sprinkled over popcorn or salads, added to juice, cereal, smoothies, gravies, soups or casseroles, or used to make sandwich spreads.

(See website for more information. I do not know if they will ship to the UK.)

    ----------------------------------

Whole Foods Market in the US has its own store brand of nutritional yeast. Look for a large grocery store which features healthy foods or one which has a wide selection of nutritional supplements. I hope you can find it.

    P.S. I love Isa!
