what is the safest way for an 8 year old to sleep in the car?

i have to travel overnight. can't be avoided.

my 8 year old will be travelling with us.

he will sleep in his high back booster, resting his head on the head support.

would he be any more comfortable on just the booster, leaning on the car seat?

or is there a way he can lay on the back seat, still belted in, and be less squashed? legally? safely?

uk trip, into france. not sure if the rules are different in france?

the 2 adults will share the driving!

How awesome that you still have your 8 year old in a high back booster!

He will be safest and most comfortable sitting/sleeping normally in his high back booster. There's no other safe or legal way for him to ride that would be comfortable as well.

I forgot I have this video bookmarked! It's foreign, but it shows a dummy the size of an average 10 year old wearing just a seat belt in a 30 mph crash. You can see that a child of this size isn't ready to be out of a booster yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yUl4dCK1GA&feature...

The high back booster gives your son the best bet of the shoulder belt staying properly positioning over his collarbone while sleeping, which is what will keep him in place in a crash.

Like Star is a Chick said- it is awesome that he is in a booster. A highback model with head wings may help sleeping kids remain in position. As long as the shoulder belt is on his collar bone and the lap belt is on his hips (a booster's job is to correct belt fit), then he will be protected in a crash.

Source(s): http://carseatblog.com/3966/the-5-step-test/ Above link: This is the ONLY accurate way to determine if a child is ready to get out of their booster. (In the UK, kids need to be 4' 5" or 12 years old, I believe to get out of a booster, well, kids may need to be taller to have the adult seat belt fit. http://www.boosttil8.org/ This is another reason why kids need to be using boosters until age they fit the adult seat belt.
