A book ABOUT Childrens fiction?

I am going to start a course in the Autumn about writing childrens fiction and authors of childrens fiction. Would anyone like to sugest a 'general' book I can read to get some background information on the subject? Thanks

Update:

Thanks for the 2 answers so far. I am more looking for a book on the 'Art' of writing childrens fiction. The kind of book that would say (and this is total gobbledygook) "Lewis Carrol developed the character Smithlock with bad habits to contrast with the heros good behaviour and show children the 'moral' right path to take'.

Update 2:

Mr Donnelly, sorry the above does not apply to 'The Childrens Book' which I may try to get - thanks

'The Children's Book' by A S Byatt. Also read fairy tales and children's fiction such as 'The Secret Garden'.
