Does anyone know how to stop utensils getting rusty in the dishwasher?

Recently I have discovered that whenever I am unloading my dishwasher, the cutlery has rust spots on them, which is really annoying as I have to scrub them really hard to get rid of the rust. Does anyone have a solution?

I filled the dishwasher this morning and emptied it as soon as it finished, only to find rust again. So frustrating!

They are stamped with the stainless steel logo. Do you get rust when you do yours, could it have anything to do with the cleanser that I use? If you don't get rust, what cleaner do you use?

    Just because your utensils have an SS stamp on them doesn't mean they're high quality, or even actually stainless because that means it has to be a steel alloy that contains at least 10.5% chromium. The cutlery you have is either not stainless or more likely, is made of carbon steel with a thin electroplated coating of stainless steel, and that's what's wearing thin allowing the iron in the core to rust through. Put a magnet on one of the pieces and if it is attracted to it, then it contains iron and is therefore not solid stainless steel.

    How old are the utensils, where did you get them, and how much did you pay for the set? If any of these questions make you unsure of the quality, coating, or actual composition of the cutlery, there really isn't much you can do to remedy the situation other than replacing it with a set made by a name brand manufacturer sold in by a reputable retailer. You can get a decent quality set of kitchenware for a very reasonable price at any discount retailer and save yourself the hassle.

    There really isn't any type of detergent or technique you can use because bare steel will rust instantly when exposed to moisture and air because it sounds like you've got cheap utensils with a thin coating of stainless steel that is wearing out.

    They probably are not stainless steel.

    ***I'm not sure if your detergents are different than the US, but I use Cascade and do not have that problem. Maybe someone else has a solution.

    As soon as the dish washer finishes, dry them straight away with a tea towel and you should be right :)

    Your utensils are not SS. SS doesn't rust.
