Americans how do feel that UNICEF has reported that the U.S. has a higher child poverty rate than every indust?

As the richest country in the world does it disturb you that one in five of your children is growing up in poverty, for blacks and Hispanics, it's one out of every three.

Only Romania ranks higher, with 25.5% of its children living in poverty, compared with 23.1% in the U.S

The US National Centre for Children in Poverty state that most of these children have parents who work, but low wages and unstable employment leave their families struggling to make ends meet. So dismissing the parents of these children as lazy or unemployed simply will not do.

We all know that those children who grow up in poverty are more likely to be marginalised in society, taking to crime, drug use and causing social problems. Surely the long term costs of having almost a quarter of your children excluded from what the majority call the necessities of life is going to be far higher than taking measures to give every child the basics and the opportunities which the rest have.

Surely our children are our future and there can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children.

Update:

Wanda, you throw around statistics, stating the average size of an American family is higher than in other countries at 3.1, yet according to your own census department it was 2.59 in 2010. see link below. This is lower than Ireland, Italy and within 0.1% of Australia, France, Finland, Canada and Austria and 0.2 of the UK, Hardly an excuse for the US high child poverty rate.

I am glad you have been successful and done well, but that does not detract from the fact that many children do not ever get the opportunity to succeed and what is I would have thought an unacceptable figure for what is the richest country in the world.

I am Latina and I grew up in pure poverty in New Jersey. Today I own a business and have a total of 12 employees and make enough to pay $34K in taxes every year. Also how many of those children growing up in the US are in the households of illegal immigrants to begin with? You said clearly 1 of every 3 Latinos right? So illegal immigrants come to our country illegally so they live in poverty because they cannot demand higher wages since they are not legally supposed to employed in the first place. Also let’s not forget to mention that the average family size in the countries near the top of that list is smaller than the average family size in the US. The Average family size in Iceland is below 2.43 (top of the list), in Australia the average family size is 2.53 (Middle of the list) but in the US the Average family size is over 3.1 (bottom of the list), that is a huge difference. So as a poor girl growing up to be successful, I am not ashamed of my country and no one gave me anything, I worked my way to the top.

You only showed part of the facts, and they become watered down when the rest of the facts are presented.

There you go, Wanda Bagram just about sums up the American attitude; "they are all illegal immigrants" or it is because "American women have one more child" than the those comparable countries or that because they grew up in poverty but made good, so if she can anyone can attitude.

The fact that 12 million children are growing up in poverty, more than the whole population of Belgium is OK for many Americans, because it must in some way be their parents fault and then they are have the nerve to call themselves a "Christians in a Christian nation"
