Could an atheist, in this time, become US president?

I'm saying this PURELY out of curiosity. I won't say what I believe or that which I don't, just a thought exercise.

If I see anything other than intelligent contributions I'll delete the question.

No. Give it another 500 years and maybe then people will realize religion is unnecessary for morality.

Something tells me you will have to delete the question before long.

Although it has been declining, religion is still a factor in American life and someone who comes forth claiming to be an atheist--that is, having faith that there is no God at all, rather than simply questioning it as an agnostic--would be suspect and people would wonder where he gets his morals from. Whether or not it would be correct to question morals is another argument, but it would happen nevertheless.

Not yet. Probably in another 10 years or so when the younger generations get older. The secular/ agnostic/ atheist/ non-denominational population is the fastest growing in the nation. Give it a few more years and people wont focus so much on irrelevant religious issues of our political leaders

No not at this time, but in future years, yes, I would say there may be an atheist in the presidency.

No because the 2 main party's use religion to split the vote... even more so for the republican party.

probably not if they're outspoken about it. too many religious folk (voters) who equate anything non christian as anti-christ or, let's be blunt, evil.

there's that oath thing as well.

but, maybe, if they keep their mouth shut on religion and go along for the ride. it has worked before.

93% of the country is Jewish or Christian so you would be starting in the hole.
