Why is the US so right wing compared to the Europe?

So now the US election is over can somebody explain to me how nearly half the people of the US, who are effectively of European decent, can vote for somebody so right wing he makes Nick Griffin looks almost, and I do mean, almost, sensible*. Especially, when you consider that Obama's policies look quite right wing from a European prospective. Is it that we fought three massive Pan European wars in 150 Years or is it perhaps something to do with the kind of people who choose to leave their country of birth and start new lives. Or maybe it's just because we are a little less backward and a bit more grown up? Or maybe we are less influenced by religion. Thoughts people?

*For those who don't know - Nick is the leader of the British Nationalist Party, A far right minority party that has little or no voice in Government.

You don't really expect a sensible answer do you?? LOL

Possibly stems from the Red scare if the 1950's, it seems this terrible time for American freedoms still infects them today. They lack actual up-to date knowledge of Europe and still talk about Russia being communist today!! Some don't know the difference between the EU and the Eurozone for example, so years of indoctrination about healthcare and European politics have lead most Americans to be further to the right than Europe.

One strong reason( in my opinion) is that WWI and WWII actually happened IN Europe, we where destroyed by the violence, hatred that encompassed our relatives, so much so that we can all see that damage in our cities, so the Eu was set up to stop this occurring again. So a greater sense of joint responsibility in the community through the state and through our representatives.

    Just a thought.

The reasons the United States is more center-right compared to Europe's center-left is our history. The religious issue. The United States is the most religiouss country in the industrialized world, gay marriage and abortion are major issues for religious people and they identify with the right because of those social issues. Our country was founded by many individuals seeking religious freedom and this issue remains important to us today.

The biggest factor is our differing belief on the role of the government- The European Government/Church have a paternalistic legacy, where the government has a much larger role providing and taking care of the people (education, health caree, housing, pension, lax work hours, vacation etc).

Americans believe the purpose of government is to secure and protect the individual rights of our citizens, nothing more.

Again the reason for the differences is our history...

America was established after breaking away from a tyrannical government and our country was founded on a Constitution that completely limited the power of the government. Americans are ingrained to not trust the government. We are also born hating taxes (right wing), we broke away from Britain because of the taxation problem and that mindset still exists today. We believe the government is far less efficient than the private sector and the government should not beinterferingg in the lives of our people.

When it comes to business Americans have always believed in the private sector rather than the public sector, we believe the government should stay away from regulating business because we rely on the private sector for 85% of our jobs. Public employees are viewed as overpaid parasites who, being paid by the government, contribute directly to the public debt. And there are indeed good economic reasons to expect the public sector to be less efficient than the private sector. The incentive provided by the profit motive is absent; public agencies tend to be monopolies; public employees are voters thus granted benefits for corrupt reason.

In Europe the Socialist economic system is favored and practiced (left wing) where as Americans are very skeptical, wary of the adverse affects Socialism would have an our economy and more importantly the tenets of Communism/Socialism completely clash with American values. Americans believe that what anindividuall earns from his hard work belongs to him, what he earns is not to be taken from him by the government and then redistributed to others, even Americans who are poor are not looking for these hand outs they are looking for the opportunity to thrive on their own. This is the very idea of the American Dream.

The American political elite live in abject fear of 'socialism' as they like to call it. What they do not want their own people to know is that it's not socialism which creates such as the NHS and the Welfare State, but Christianity - based upon the parable of the Good Samaritan who did not pass by on the other side.

because they're so against Cuba, it's hard for them to go to the left without uneducated people saying that they'll end up terrible like Cuba. Even though it's only right wing media that portray Cuba as being terrible, i've been there and it's great. there is a lot of poverty, but that isn't helped by Americas silly trade rules with it.

Cuba is a democracy, but on the news the other day; someone who didn't know where to vote in New York due to Sandy said ''We are a democracy, we should be able to vote, this is not Cuba'' !!!!!!

    facepalm.

IMO, they should be more afraid of the right as that's what created Hitler and the Nazi regime.

Terms like "right wing" can be deceiving. There is only one true political scale, with Total Government on the left and No Government on the right. The political scale taught in schools and shown on tv is false,as both left and right ultimately lead to a totalitarian system.Elections are really just "feel good" exercises.Control comes from behind the scenes.Same thing in your country. The EU is a trial run for the North American Union of Canada,Mexico, and the US.Ultimately we'll all be under the UN;left, right, and no wings.

different cultures. i like that the US has at least some white people who are conservative. why should all white people have to be as liberal as western europeans??? and to turn this around on you, why are europeans so secular??? why aren't you people as religious as the middle east????

the US can at least demonstrate that not all white people in the world are pagans. europe is full of pagans. there are still people in the world who have traditional values.

Because if you give people guns and keep '"dem ho-mos" from getting married, they'll let big business rape them dry and thank them for it.
