How do I create separate "windows" in Google Blogger?

I'm trying to set up a blog, which I've never done before and I'm feeling a bit bamboozled... I've set up an account in Google (I don't want to invest any $ at this stage) and have a basic layout set up. However, the "look" I want to achieve for my front page is more of a magazine style, with side windows (not just links) to things like a quote for the day, a photo, a progress chart etc. At the moment, all I can do is set up a link to a separate page. How do I set up a "feed" (or similar) so that the content of the other page shows up on the side of my blog? Thanks for any assistance...

Go to the layout page, and try 'add a gadget' in the sidebar. There are dozens of different possibilities, including news feeds, quotes and so on. The gadgets are sort of small applications that can be used freely on blogs.

Note, though, that too much in your sidebar will detract from your posts.

You can play around with the templates too if you want a different look.
