You have to find the muscles that control rotation from the hip. We always say DON'T practice at home, but you can try this: after you have warmed your hips with some light stretching (sit with the soles of your feet together and let your knees fall open), stand and do a slow rond de jambe. Point your foot forward and feel the rotation. It will feel like you are wrapping your leg outward (you will be "wrapping" your standing leg as well). Now move it to the side, keeping that feeling of rotation, then continue to the back. If you do these very slowly you will find the muscles you need. Once you can remember this feeling concentrate on it in class at the barre in everything you do and eventually it will become second nature and you will no longer have to concentrate so hard. One caveat about practice at home: you do not have the right kind of floor and can easily end up with shin splints or achilles tendinitis, so NEVER do anything that is the slightest bit percussive against the floor.
