Americans ..... this is not a hateful question but ......?

How widespread is the use of knives?

Let me explain. I'm watching Rules Of Engagement and in a diner scene, three of the main characters were having a plateful of something for lunch ... no knives were being used nor any on the table.

In the background, none of the extras were using knives and when I visited Miami a few years ago, my friends and I went out for lunch and they were surprised when I used a knife AND a fork.

I know you are a sophisticated people but was wondering if it's a cultural thing.

    maybe butter knife...haha

We use knives just maybe not everyone and not always at a table especially at home.

Maybe it just depends on the setting or people.

It could be a social class or type of food matter.

In my home, we use knives but since there's so many small children then

we are least likely to use a knife for steak or any other food.

We never go out to restaurants. I don't really think I need knives that much when I eat.

That's really interesting. I guess it really just depends on people. Some do and some don't.

Knives are provided in most restaurants here. ... especially if the restaurant has the ability to serve any kind of dish with larger than bite sized pieces of meat. (except for berger joints ... but even then they will have plastic knives to hand out if requested). And even at home and the homes of my friends and relatives we will use stake or butter knives when needed for our meals. But if the meal is easily cut with the edge of a fork (like soft pancakes or casseroles) then knives are not needed and are left untouched on the table. ... so we only use what we need ... most of us at least.

Ha ha, movies and TV shows are made by people who make mistakes or make things up all the time. Never base a culture off of something that you view that is not a documentary.

  • I use knives all the time. You're friends are just weird.

Unless you use a knife to eat pizza or a hamburger or something.

we americans don't care, most of the time, if we get a little grease and crumbs on our hands. so culturally we dont use them as often only time we do is if we're eating something that requires cutting like pancakes for example
