Are Church values duplicitous?

In the UK, Church leaders are speaking against the government's support for introducing same-sex marriage (a step up from the current Civil Partnerships), which shows a lack of compassion for, and persecution of, a minority. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/form...

On the other hand, they're criticising the UK government for cutting benefits for the less well off. This seems to show compassion and an attempt to protect the poor. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21989816

There seems to me to be lack of direction. Why do they show charity to one set of people (which I applaud), while persecuting another (which I abhor)?

    Interesting Question! But, you're right, it does show double standards in these modern times.

    I guess they quote the Bible as homosexuality being sinful

    But, also, the Bible says to help the poor.

    It is the government that is duplicitous and so are gays. They love the idea of freedom of speech, but they will quickly become the thought police. As society reorganizes its values, they will start coming after the Church and any individual who doesn't modify their belief system to make gay okay ~ using every punitive measure at their disposal.

    You do know what the Church is don't you?

    The whole existence of the Church doesn't make sense, why would their values?

    Homosexuality is sin.

    Why do you expect churches to support sin?

    You must be pretty far gone not to understand that.
