Do you feel 'differently' about nieces & nephews on either side of family?

I really hope this comes across as I mean it to!

I have nephews on both sides, my husband's brothers kids and my sisters kids and although I love them all deeply I find its a different feeling as such

Firstly my brother in law's kids are fun and good kids but they're always soooo hyped up on sugary junk food and drink that they're super loud and its always so chaotic! Of course I would do anything for them and I do love them but I find it a struggle

My sisters kids on the other hand I feel differently towards. Much more motherly and close to them even though they live 200 miles away and my other nephews are just round the corner. I miss them every day when I don't see them and I just feel so much more loving towards them

Anyone else find they feel differently towards relatives? Obviously my sister is my blood rather than in laws but I'm shocked at the difference I feel between them and feel bad that it seems negative

I do feel a bit different because, as you say, the parents are different.

My husband's sister is a bit strange, and she married into a family that is, frankly ,trailer trash. (Her stepson has been in jail, her stepdaughter had a baby at 15.) And while their daughter is a good kid, their expectations for her have been pretty low. (She graduated high school 2 years ago and has been working at a pizza place ever since.)

My own family is well educated, and my neices and nephews are all well brought up and well educated as well. So we have more in common, and I find them easier to get along with.

For you, I think it's more how your husband's brothers parent their kids. If the kids weren't so hyper and better behaved, maybe you'd feel more like you do about your sister's kids.

My husband's sister and her husband have three kids, who are 11, 4, and 1. I feel as if they are my own. They live only 15 minutes away from us, so we see them all the time. Our kids are very close with their cousins. Those kids are by no means perfect- the 11 year old is starting to get a little more teenagerish, the 4 year old is a crazy man lol, and the 1 year old is, well, a baby who screams and kicks and cries. But my kids aren't perfect either! My brother's wife is currently pregnant with a little girl, their first, and I'm sure I'll love her in the same way that I love my other niece and nephews, no matter what she's like.

But, I can understand your point-of-view. I'm sure as your nephews on your husband's side grow older, they'll mature and you'll have more in common with them. Just remember, no one's perfect! :)

    Completely normal.

My sister is sort of a hippy and doesn't believe in any sort of discipline. Her kids are spoiled brats and I don't want to be around them.

My neighbor's kids are awesome, and a great influence on my own kids. I'd much rather have my kids hang out with the neighbor kids than my nieces/nephews.

I do not feel differently about them. I have a different relationship with all of them. You may miss the others more just because you do not get to see them all the time. Not all kids are the same.

I only have nieces & nephews on my wife's side. I like them, but I'm sure it will be nothing like seeing my brother with his own kids one day. I totally understand, they are related by blood and they are the kids of someone you grew up with and knows you as well as you know yourself.

    That's completely normal =]

I myself feel closer to my mum's side of the family than my dad's, as all through my childhood, I often saw my mother's mum/aunts more often than my dad's. Oh don't get me wrong, each side treated me well and I'm grateful for their being there through my childhood but I feel my mum's side are more of the tv show loving family, and my dad's side are all party/drinking buddies XD

It's the same with how they feel about me.

You shouldn't feel bad as we cannot choose our family, and just sometimes, different relationships grow.

    We all get it =]
