Why does God need prophets?

Corollary - what can a prophet do that an omnipotent God cannot?

f God is omnipotent then a prophet is unnecessary and redundant. If a priophet is necessary it can only be because that prophet can do something God cannot - which means God is not omnipotent.

Update:

Many answers, thanks for the considered ones. A lot of the believers answers, when stripped down, become this:- God needs a prophet(s) because prophets say God needs their prophecy . Other answers are of the opinon that God can't be bothered to talk directly to everyone but delegates the task as though He was some billionaire industrialist. What do you think God is doing with all the spare time His delegation creates for Him?

As for quoting prophets who attempt to justify their status - that is just plain silly - "I'm right and the proof is that I say I'm right" just does not work.

Update 2:

Catherine, the only reason we have to believe God spoke to these prophets is that these prophets said He did. It's a circular argument and how much you believe in it depends on how much faith you have in these prophets not in your faith in God.

    BigAl,

For starters, it's not that God needs anything from us mortals, but is helping us develop as children of Him.

Secondly, a "Prophet" is only a "messenger" and nothing else.

Thirdly, God has always used messengers, and always will ( since God never changes.)

Next, there are few religions on earth that even claim to have Prophets of God. Not all who claim to be Prophets of God are actual Prophets of God; however, if a religion doesn't even claim to have Prophets, then one can scratch said religion off the list of even possibly being of God.

Some religions claim there is only one prophet on earth at a time, such teachings are contrary to ancient scriptural claims. Moses had said that the Lord would that all his people were prophets. Abraham was a Prophet too, but not the only one on earth when he lived. Scripture says that all who have the testimony of Christ receive the gift of Prophecy ( thus would make such persons Prophets/Prophetesses.) In Jeremiah's day in Jerusalem, there were a number of Prophets of God in Jerusalem at the same time. Jeremiah and Uriah were but two of those Prophets of God.

In scripture we read that "there must needs be opposition in all things." ALL means ALL. That said, even scripture has the words of God, and the words of the adversary of all righteousness also ( which accounts for the contradictory statements throughout scripture.)

I can think of only a small number of churches that even claim a belief in God having Prophets, and fewer still that believe God still has them. My argument though is that as God is the same to-day, yesterday, and forever, God still has prophets.

A few religious entities that claim to believe in Prophets of God being on earth to-day are:

    mainstream Mormons

    Fundamentalist-Mormons.

and a few evangelical churches here and there. I have known some evangelical churches of Southern Baptist leanings who claim to believe in Prophets, plus a few other churches with small numbers of members.

mainstream Mormons claim to believe in only one person titled prophet on earth at a time. Other people may be prophets ( quorum of the 12 for example), but not be titled as such.

Fundamentalist-Mormons (FM) believe those holding the office of 70, standing quorum of the 12, and traveling quorum of the 12 all are equal in authority, but differ in their duties. This is read in Doctrine and Covenants 107; 18-40 ( even the mainstream Mormons have this in their scriptures.) FMs believe in the following statement of Joe Smith ( 1 April 1844 in Times and Seasons) " If any man writes to you, or preaches to you, doctrines contrary to the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, set him down as an imposter." FMs claim their are many differences between what the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Book of Doctrine and Covenants say,and what the mainstream Mormons teach. One such difference is D&C 132; 61 where it speaks of the principle of a just man having more than one wife is correct, and a matter of Priesthood law ( The FMs use Abraham, Jacob, and Moses as some of the major examples of polygyny; which in truth, these men of God were polygynists.) It should also be noted that the FLDS is just one of hundreds of FM groups, most have nothing to do with the FLDS, and never did. All FMs have their own belief systems, yet it seems the FLDS are the only group I know of that 'marries' under-aged girls, and abuses them; most FMs would never allow marriages any younger than 18.

As for the random evangelical Ministers, some claim a belief in Prophets, but most believe Prophets are a thing of the past, and through their words seem to declare that God really does change and is not the same yesterday, to-day, and forever.

Deuteronomy 18:18 says, I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

Why does God need prophets? God created mankind. He can have whatever He wants. My flesh and blood is His.

What can a prophet do that an omnipotent God cannot? A prophet can do nothing without God.

You are going to be a prophet. God has told me this. God is omnipotent, and prophets are not redundant. He reveals things to us because He loves us. We get to speak for God.

God doesn't NEED prophets, but He CHOSE to use prophets - in the past. Now that we have the full and complete Bible, and Jesus Christ has already come as the promised Messiah and Saviour of the world, we have everything we need in order to know God.

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. - Hebrews 1:1-4

Edit: No, the reason I believe God spoke to these prophets is NOT because these prophets said He did, but because GOD said that He did! I am not trusting in any prophet but in God Himself, whom I know is 100% trustworthy, truthful and reliable.

  • Have you ever thought of reading the Bible to find out?

Most prophets in the Bible were sent to people that would not listen.

Also your logic is pretty poor. I suggest some philosophy classes. God not doing something is not proof he cannot do it the same way that an H bomb not exploding is not proof that it cant.

To do His will... just as Angels are God's messengers, God used the prophets to do His will and let people know what His will was.

You are viewing God through YOUR "eyes." Just because God uses an angel or prophet to do something does NOT mean that God CANNOT DO it Himself. Your assumption is incorrect. It is done because God WILLS it to be done, or not.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.

You speak this out of your originality, or someone told you that?

You can hardly stand the sun light on a summer day, and you want to see God talking to you "directly" and not through a Prophet?

It's like Chicken Little facing the 52 railroad cars train approaching fast, while it is standing in between the rails: "Man up. I'm coming to you!!" Really?

Though God is Omnipotent, He wants you to believe in Him without apparently seeing Him in person, but just through His 'signatures' all around you, using your intelligence and freewill. And He so loves us that He didn't want any of us to be lost, so He chose some exalted souls as prophets , apparently showed them His signs, and to one (Moses) He even conversed, and sent them as guides to mankind.

Because religions with prophets come from a time before people could even imagine the concept of mass communication. It simply would have been too science fiction that god would just speak to everyone on the planet.

It seems the prophets were just borrowing the name to make them god-like.

The mass needed a government of belief. The prophets benefited.
