Number Plate Without BSAU145d Mark?

Question

Hi, I have a 1984 Kawasaki KLR600. When I purchased the bike it came with 12 Months MOT and what looks like a personalised number plate. However, recently I got stopped because the number plate didn't have a 'BS AU 145d' mark on it. The police officer let me off and told me to get the plate changed. He told me that the size and lettering was fine. After doing some research, I came across a forum where a few said that if the vehicle is over a certain age it doesn't need to show the BSAU mark. Is this true? Only asking as I like the plate and I'd rather try and keep it if I can, but if not then no problem.

Update:

He told me that the font style, size and plate size where fine. Just that it didn't have the BSAU Mark. I've been riding it almost a year, not been stopped for it until now. I was also pulled over at the time, so I guess the only reason he noticed it was because he walked over and checked out the bike.

Strangely enough, the requirement to display the BS mark depends on when the plates were manufactured. 
If your plates were made before the 31st of August 2001, they don't need the mark - but a new plate, even if it is for a vehicle registered before 2001, must show the mark.

If you need glasses to read a number plate then you MUST wear the glasses whenever you are driving. If you do not and you have an accident then your insurance is invalidated and you will also be guilty of dangerous or reckless driving which carries a custodial sentence.

Would I be right in thinking that this 'personalised plate' was in a non-standard font, or layout, or size? 

If so, that's why you've been pulled. The original number plate on a 1984 bike will still be perfectly legal today.

Good question, but you're asking in the wrong place.  You're looking for legal advice (traffic and licencing regulations are still laws), and never take legal advice from a total stranger online.  We don't hold up very well as defence witnesses in court.

You want to contact the MOT (or whoever does this stuff) and ask them what to do.  Not only will they tell you, but their answer won't be a guess or an assumption.  You get no such guarantees in here.
