best place in japan for history AND manga/anime enthusiasts?

i was looking to book a holiday for next year for me and my partner and although i want to experience the more historical japan like visiting temples and shrines and going to a natural hot spring and, obviously, staying in a ryokan (yukata at the ready <3), my partner is more into the idea of going somewhere that's more like a 24 hour comic con. i do love this idea myself so we want to go somewhere where that has both, history and modern entertainment im not hot on kyoto as it would be REALLY expensive and was originally thinking of kyoto, osaka but they don't have ANY ryokans in any pat of osaka anymore so that was a no go =/

any suggestions?

There is Akihabara, a town of anime and game, in Tokyo. Tokyo is the best for anime fans.

On the other hand, Kyoto is the best place for historical places. But what do you mean by Kyoto not having ryokan? There are many.

If you do not want to visit 2 cities at the same time for financial and other reasons, you can stay in Tokyo and make excursion to historical places like Kamakura and Nikko which is near Tokyo.

But it's expensive no matter where you go in Japan.

How many days do you have?

I'm not sure Japan has a separate anime convention, but I do know they have science fiction conventions, and they are probably going to be held in Tokyo or Yokohama.

Nikko is a daytrip from Tokyo, and you can stay in a ryokan there, too -- you might want to stay two nights so you have a full day to wander around.

You can also visit Studio Ghibli.

There's a lot of noise about the wonderfulness of Akihabara, but when I went, it was rather flat. There's an anime museum, and a theater there. Do your research before you go about places to go there.

We went to the Harry Potter exhibit in Roppongi Hills. I was really skeptical -- Harry Potter in Japan? It was all in Japanese, but it was quite gorgeous. So, you might look for that sort of special event. The Roppongi Hills area was definitely worth walking through.

And Harajuku/Meiji Jingu give you a nice double punch of old Japan and new, modern Japan. It's really close to Shinjuku, so I'd recommend staying there for at least a couple of nights.

Tokyo is not only the political and economical centre of Japan but it has also emerged as a centre of the world economy and culture so is a city worth visit; with hotelbye you will see more. There are a number of attractions in Tokyo that should not be missed. There are large-scale downtown areas, including Ginza where famous shops from around the world stand side by side, the sleepless Shinjuku that has become the "new city centre of Tokyo," Asakusa which is reminiscent of the traditional Edo (the former name of Tokyo) and Shibuya that starts the trends for the young people. Tokyo is an interesting city, a city that you will never forget once you visit it.

    Tokyo, then Kyoto.
