Why are we now confined to our own country when answering questions on Y/A?

Previously it was possible to move from country to country in answering questions. One obvious advantage of this is when answering questions on languages: you can offer help using your mother tongue to someone struggling with a translation. You can offer a different perspective to someone pondering an issue. Best of all, you could make friends with people all over the world. Now, for some reason, any attempt to answer questions outside the confines of one's country of residence is banned. Why is this so? There is no advantage in erecting this barrier and there are several disadvantages! Please return our freedom of movement!

Update:

Has anyone answering this question actually tried to post an answer in another language on the page of another country? I have tried on numerous occasions over the past few days and I can tell you that the system no longer works.

As a test I just went onto the France site, and answered a question in French - it worked perfectly. I am on the UK site - I have no idea why it doesn't work for you, but it definitiely works. The posted question appears in my acivitiy lists.

At the bottom left there is International and that lets you travel that way

Remember if you are in a Foreign Language site you are required to use their language, not English

    How are you being "confined?"

Your question is from the UK; I am in the US. I am answering your question.

On the left side of the page is the "International" link. You can access the other countries there.

If you go on one of the foreign language sites, though, you MUST post in THAT language, not English.

You are still able to go to different countries. You will find the 'International' option on the left hand page.
