What's the maximum possible sentence for animal neglect or abuse?

This woman was found to have neglected a foal so badly it had to be put down, and she received a 3 year ban on keeping horses, which is quite frankly pathetic. She should have had a life ban on keeping any animal.

People have been found badger baiting and get a similarly light treatment. Yet someone in the riots who stole a bottle of water received a jail sentence, and in theory, you can get 5 years in jail or more for drug possession, There's no proportionality in sentencing.

Why doesn't the law take animal abuse seriously? Especially in cases where they could easily have stopped it? This kind of cruel, barbaric treatment is not accidental or a one off- it is a cold, calculating crime of the most vile nature. People who do this to animals will do it to humans.

The sorry thing is animals have no rights...here where I live the cruelty is out of hand yet there isn't a dam thing you can do about it...nobody will listen...nobody cares...my neighbors dog wouldn't stop barking so he went out and shot the dog...another guys hunting dog was in my yard....the guy pulls up on a 4 wheeler looking for his dog and when he caught the dog he started punching the dog so hard I thought he was killing it...I told him what the f--- are you doing...and he tells me hes taking the dog home to shoot it...he ties a rope around the dog neck and drags the dog down the road behind his 4 wheeler...we use to have a lot of wildlife and now people are shooting everything that moves so the wildlife is about gone...are people really this f---ed up in the head...yes they are!

In Australia you can certainly expect a prison term unless it can be proven you're not right in the head.
