You are entitled to a one off tax free Bereavement Payment and, based on what you say, Bereavement Allowance for 52 weeks.
Beravement Payment is classed as capital so needs to be declared if you receive any means tested benefits.

If you are on any means tested benefits - ESA, HB etc then Bereavement Allowance is counted as income so you need to declare it.
If you receive DLA or PIP then this won't be affected. Look at the link to see how to proceed. Visit CAB if you need further help.

It is now known as the bereavement allowance and is payable for up to one year after the death of spouse or partner.
See here

It can be affected by other benefits but is worth making the claim. DWP do not contact you it is up to you to make the claim.

You can claim bereavement allowance perhaps, there are many restrictions. Citizens Advice Bureau will be able to advise you after checking your details.
I fear you will not qualify but try C.A.B.
