What starter and dessert do I serve with a heavy main course?

I am having friends for dinner and want to make a traditional Austrian Goulash for my main, but need something fairly light to prepare for starter and dessert?

Braised cabbage or a light salad.

    Don't forget the Spaetzle!

But here is an idea on menus too:

With menus, you normally move from light to stronger flavours to be sure that the first things you eat don't overpower the next. With a dish like goulash, you might want a light starter of shellfish, a fish, or light soup. For dessert, you can have something strong in flavour, like chocolate and fruit sauces.

Mushrooms stuffed with a cheese and breadcrumb mixture would be light but carry out the earthy, rustic theme of the goulash. A fruit cobbler (with cream or ice cream optional) continues the theme, but made with minimal sugar and puff pastry needn't be too heavy. I would use berries.

Serve an appetizer salad, like mixed greens garnished with golden raisins, toasted walnuts or pecans and slivers of Austrian Emmenthaler or Austrian Gruyere cheese. Cheese slivers are made with a potato peeler. Dress the salad with extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic fruit balsamic vinegar. You can use any Emmenthaler or Gruyere cheese if you can't find cheese made in Austria.

or for something even lighter, serve fresh halved figs with one of the above cheeses or wrap each fig half in Speck from Austria or Italy. Add a piece of cheese or some nuts to the plate.

The easiest dessert to serve would be an Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Crème or Vanilla Sauce. You can find strudels in a good bakery or also in the frozen food section of your supermarket. Linzer tart is another popular dessert in Austria. Most bakeries have Linzer tart cookies.

or make your own Linzer Tort using the recipe at this site. It works well for company because is should be made the day before you serve it.

For a starter, try sliced cucumbers in a vinaigrette. For a dessert, fruit always works--try poached pears in a light wine sauce or glaze. Keep both starter and desserts light and palate-cleansing.

well anything with little or no protein would be good, protein feels you up, carbs do too but takes lot more. Id suggest vegetables aka salad as starter and for dessert maybe hmmm cookies maybe hard to say most desserts have milk=protein and or eggs.
