why do glass ,ceramic,plastic etc. - when used in a microwave get heated,even though they are bone dry.excuse me if i am sounding naive.?

What the substance is (water, glass, or whatever) doesn't matter.
If its atoms / molecules are resonant -- or nearly resonant --
at the frequency of the microwaves, the item will heat up.

_Any_ dielectric (i.e. insulator) will get heated in a microwave, not just water. For details, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dielectric_heating .
