    Factorize by splitting the middle term.

    x^2 + 2x - 8 = 0

    x^2 + 4x - 2x - 8 = 0

    x(x + 4) - 2(x + 4)

    (x - 2) (x + 4)

    Width will be (x - 2) cm

    factor the expression for the area...

    x² + 2x - 8 = (x + 4)(x - 2)

    if the length is (x + 4) cm, then the width MUST BE: (x - 2) cm

    that was easy !!

    L = (x+4). A = x^2 + 2x - 8 = (x+4)(x-2) = L*W. Then W = A/L = (x-2). [units

    are cm.]

    [ x + 4 ] [ x - 2 ] = x² + 2x - 8

    Width = x - 2 cm

    (x^2+2x-8)= (x+4)(x-2)

    width is x-2 cm since length * width =area
