for example - I find a funny bit in a film I have saved as a complete film on my laptop Id like to load just the segment to my facebook account or such

how would I cut that from the file and save for uploading

MACs have a build in program called iMovie that can do that.  There are others you could get, but they all work the same and are all going to be just as easy or just as hard to use.

With iMovie, you load the clip, you use the "cut" to chop out the section you.  You delete the parts you do not want.  And you save the new clip.  Not that hard to do.
