Nod, the Hebrew word nohdh [fugitiveness] is derived from the root word nudh, a form of which is rendered ''fugitve'' in Ge 4:12 & 14.Cain took up residence in the ''land of Nod'' or ''Exile,'' this was a land somewhere east of Eden, but its location is not known.

No one lived in Nod, until Cain began wandering there, because Eve had become the mother of all living. (Genesis 3:20) In the third account of Creation, Genesis 5 identifies the man of chapter 1 as Adam of chapter 2, so the first two accounts of creation are about the same man and woman, so there were no other people:

"1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 2Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created." - Genesis 5 (KJV)

The Hebrew נ֖וֹד (nō-wḏ), (aka "Nod"), is not a particular location, but in English means, "wandering". Thus:

"And Cain goeth out from before Jehovah, and dwelleth in the land, moving about east of Eden;" - Genesis 4:16 (YLT)

Likewise, in verse 12, God called Cain a wanderer, and in verse 14, Cain called himself a "homeless wanderer" (NLT).

Verse 17 tells us that Cain built a "city". The meaning of the Hebrew עִ֔יר (‘îr) varies, so that it may at times mean "city", but in the context of Cain's wandering, it more likely means a campsite to which he returned, and it was eventually settled by his descendants; chiefly Enoch, for whom the place was named.

Verse 17 also says that Cain knew his wife. It does not specify whether this occurred before or during his wanderings, and it certainly does not say that he found her during his wanderings. The verse begins with the assumption that Cain has a wife, implying that he already had one.

i always believed the land of nod was in africa, or was africa

but it would take a map of ancient origin to prove what the lands were called , however i did find a map that makes it to be east of assur. probably. but if men cannot aggree on where the garden of Eden was, how can they know for sure any map is real and true
