A question about file backup on Windows 10?

I would like to reformat my hard drive. I need to backup certain files first. All of my important files are currently stored on an external USB hard drive, but a lot of application files are on the C: drive mainly in the Programs and Programs(x86) folders. If I want to save just my apps, I'm unsure as to what files need to be backed up.

Just backup all your Word,Excel etc. on your desktop pictures, videos and all you think is important because everything stored on your desktop is part of your C Drive:

you cannot save apps. they need to be reinstalled after reinstallation of Windows. if they are from the app store, there is no problem, they can be added back easily. if they are standalone programs, you need the original discs or installers, some of which may be downloadable.

but you cannot just copy the program folders as there are registry entries and other things that are added on installation.

You cannot back up apps, you will need to reinstall all of them after you reformat and reinstall the OS.
