Why is Glasgow known for being so violent?

I heard that Glasgow is one of the most violent cities in Europe and the most violent in the UK. In the 1920s it was even more violent than now. Does anyone know why it has this reputation? What brought it all on?

Get with it! You're talking a decade ago. London, Birmingham and other English cities are way ahead of Glasgow now in the 'most violent/murder' category.

There has been a huge reduction in violence in Glasgow in recent years due to proactive policing. Large English cities are now far worse. Alcohol, drugs, deprivation, poor parenting etc all play their part in street crime.

Sectarianism was partly responsible and drink-fuelled violence didn't help the situation.
