How do you collect a debt from a friend in a civil manner?

In the past I'd just use violence and it works every time, but I'm a changed man and I'm not trying to catch another assault charge. I've already lost a friend out of this, but how do I get my money? Any tips?

Ask your friend to make agreed upon monthly payments or you will have no choice but to file with Small claims court. Or let it go as a lesson learned.

Then stop lending money unless you can afford to give it away.

    Small claims court.

Document what you are owed, and why, and ask for reasonable time payments. End the letter with the promise that if no payments are received by a reasonable (and certain) amount of time and they do not continue to the point of fulfilling the debt, you will take them to small claims court to recover the rest.

Look up "Letter of Demand" online. If it is a significant amount, you may find it works better to pay a lawyer to issue one on their letterhead on your behalf.

Sue them in a civil court.

You gather solid evidence that you are owed the money and that you have attempted to collect it - copies of demand notices sent by mail and proof that they were delivered are good documents to have, phone calls mean nothing. And you take your evidence to small claims court and make your case. You may ask for your court costs as well as damages.
