To start with, it depends on what kind.  Lawn mower engine?  Remote control airplane?  Tractor?  Full sized truck?

Then you do a search in your local area and start calling around.  I did one for my area and found a number of places which are at least good leads.  

I'm not sure if you have a pep boys nearby, but they might be able to get a new (or used) engine, for instance, though they might want to install it too.  How about just calling some local places.
