If people pursue a relationship with God for the sake of salvation, doesn't that make it hollow?

Let me clarify, what I mean to say is that most people follow God for the sake of avoiding eternal damnation, right? So isn't that just the same thing as having a friend because they are paying you to be? Shouldn't you have a relationship with God for a more purer reason like to simply get connected to your divine creator because they're amazing?

Not for those who seem to believe they have chosen correctly in the gods and have actually "made the grade".

Is a baby's relationship with it's mother hollow because it is based entirely on need (for food, warmth, attention, etc)? No, because it is what is natural for the baby at that stage of development. As it grows and matures, it's relationship will also grow into something deeper.

It is the same with our relationship with God - it might start from a position of pure needfulness, but it should grow into a less self-interested love as it matures.

IT IS NOT A CASE OF PEOPLE PERSUEING YHVH GOD, IT IS MORE LIKE YHVH GOD IN YESHUA THE MESSIAH PERSUEING US. CALLING US TO REPENT AND COME TO SALVATION. NOTHING HOLLOW ABOUT A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

A person can love God with a more pure love, more like that of Mary's love for Him, by reciting the rosary every day with care and sincerity.

I'm an atheist but I disagree with your premise. I think that most people who believe in God do so because they come from a society where that is the norm - they have been taught to believe in God because God exists. They believe that they are living their lives according to the way God  wants them to. They believe they are being “good people” which is what they want to be.

The 'relationship' bit began with God, who decided to relate to the humans He created by making them in His image and likeness. That relationship was that of a Father with His children. The children broke that relationship by disobedience and from then on, our sins created a chasm between us and God. Yet God, in love, bridged the chasm via the cross of Christ and appeals to us to be reconciled to Him. It is God who always takes the initiative in such matters. We can only respond - or not respond. Those who feel that spiritual void and long to be close to God can do so by turning in faith to God (who is too holy to look upon sin) and repent of our sin, trusting in what the Son of God did to restore us to our heavenly Father. It's not hollow selfishness on our part; more like the outworking of Jesus' parable of the prodigal son.

"Hello Games" created a vast virtual universe with trillions of planets and even more creatures inside of it. If one day a creature where to become self-aware in that matrix, I don't think Shawn Murrey would be any more a real deity, nor would my avatar, even though I am apart of its creation.

People should come to God to have a relationship and do the right things, to be a reflection of God. But we aren't perfect so at first it's like baby steps especially if you fell and became a lost sheep but came back
