Should it be wrong to tax the dead?

Complicated issue.  On the one hand it is fundamentally unfair to tax inheritance as tax was already paid on this money when it was earned.  Even if it is a house, after tax money went into paying the deposit and mortgage.

On the other hand, if there is no inheritance tax, wealth becomes gradually more and more concentrated in the hands of the few.  That increases the division between rich and poor.  That started during the industrial revolution and did not end until WW1.

There is also a valid argument for each generation to have a level playing field.  Not really right that some should get hand-outs from their parents that they did not earn and do not deserve.

Tell you what: If ONLY the dead person keeps/gets the money, they can have it tax free.

Of course, as a LIVING person gets the inheritance, then this has NOTHING to do with taxing a dead person.

    Duh.

An Inheritance, is Unearned Income to the Recipients, nothing to do with the dead person. Inheritance tax is only paid if it is over £325.000  and only on the money over that amount. It is not something that is taxed twice, as a different person is being taxed not the Dead Person.

If a Dead Person dies without leaving a will. or the recipients may have predeceased the dead person, then it does go to the "Lord of the Manor" the "Government". eventually. A big deal is made about finding people who may qualify for distant relatives money. There are Companies make a living finding distant relatives on behalf of the Government.

Why would it be legal?  When a person dies.........his or her taxes immediately stop.

I've never heard of any of them complaining about it.

Yes, the dead can't vote. This is the ultimate taxation without representation, it should be wrong.

Edit: It won't change until the undead becomes a real thing though. That is what all those zombies in those apocalyptic movies are uprising about.

Once a person dies, everything they had owned should go to the lord of the land, including debts.

The dead are not taxed, sometimes the person inheriting is.
