They are largely American inventions, produced by American companies and assembled in China by marginal slave labor to reduce costs and increase profit.

The exact reason for the tariffs and returning these jobs to the US.

When Trump put tariff's on China, I cringed. In a global economy, picking a fight with China is a stupid idea when a lot of the technology we use is made there.

Thought I knew the answer to the initial question, then you added so much that I'm not sure what you are really asking about, but to get back to the initial question = YES trump has over stepped,

Yeah, he keeps stepping on his tongue every time he uses it.

Hummm, where does the Trump family have their products manufactured? The clothing, shoes, makeup and other items sold to America and the world? Oh that's right, Mexico, China and other places not in the USA, to make the most profits, which they couldn't if their products were made in the USA. Yet he wants other businesses to bring their manufacturing back to America, but will not do the same for their companies.

He has tried to make it more difficult to buy Chinese merchandise and bring back manufacturing to the U.S. but I'm afraid its 30 years too late. U.S. corporations wont go along with that and lose profits. The Chinese have advanced so much in 20 years they are competing with us in technology and science. Mr. Trump cannot undo it even threatening tariffs on their junk. But he gave it a try.
