Why do people go on cruise ships?

Just the thought of slow travel and seeing nature is great.

  • I think many people cruise because its a great all inclusive vacation.  You get on ship, unpack, and all of your food and entertainments is provided and you can arrange to have all of your drinks provided also.  And the ship brings new scenery to you each day from a beach to a historic site in Italy or Egypt.

For me its a way to see the world and I/we have seen it that way from Russia to Australia; from Alaska to South America.  Most of those places you will not want more than the day that a cruise ship provides; at least that's how I feel based on my experiences.

My wife and I typically do two, two week vacations a year, a land vacation, and a cruise.  Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Land vacation:  You are on your own schedule.  You can take your time, and make things up as you go along.  On the downside, you have to research hotels, restaurants, things to do, etc.  If the weather is lousy, your plans may go in the toilet. We tend to drive from place to place, so we have to check into and out of hotels, sort routes, and pack and unpack. If you are driving, you have to restrict drinking, and if you are in another country, you have to become research driving laws, signage, and that sort of thing.  Did you know that if you get out of your car on the side of the road in Spain, you are required to wear a bright yellow safety vest?  You will get a ticket if you don't.

Cruise:  You have to unpack once.  You have a variety of dining options on the ship, but you don't have to do much planning ahead. I have to plan for a pre-cruise hotel, and maybe one restaurant, and once I set foot on the ship, my work is done.  It's easy to meet cool people.  I've made friends from all over the world that I'm in frequent contact with.  When I book a cruise, someone I know also books it, so it's fun to hang out.  There are loads of things to do on the ship, or if you want to do nothing, that's your choice.  You can drink without worrying about driving. On the down side, you are on the ship's schedule.  If you are in a really cool port, you don't have the flexibility you would on a land vacation.

I can't say I prefer one over the other.  I'm the planner, so I have to do all the work, and land vacations take much more planning. I find the land vacations to be more enriching, but cruises are more relaxing.  I was supposed to go on one next month. Not happening.

For us it's easy travel to a wide range of interesting places, comfortable accommodation, good food, a range of different people to meet, no need to pack and unpack at every destination, usually a decent show in the evening, a range of guided tours at almost every destination - they cost extra but you don't have to do any of them. Generally very relaxing.

Different people like different vacations. My husband and  I could not stand being a huge ship with  thousands of other people. And after this virus any desire to go on one is completely gone.

Our friends have gone on two Disney cruises and plan on doing again in the near future. They enjoy them. You don’t have to think about food, where to eat, what to do.
