The most important difference is that illegal immigration is how America is able to produce enough food.  Legal immigration is not.  Without illegal immigration, we wouldn't be able to produce enough food to feed the citizens -- or the legal immigration.  But illegal immigration gives us the ability to produce more than we need, and export the excess.
