Yes - I have tons of friends who we only communicate when we are not busy. People are busy- people work, have kids, its a busy life! 

Sure. Its just that they can't be deep friends.

This happens all the time.  Sometimes friends aren't even able to make a phone call to each other for a while.  It doesn't mean the friendship is over. 

Sure.  Friendships come in all levels of closeness - it all depends upon the type of people that make up the relationship.

I have met and become friends with many people during the course of my life.  Some I am just "friendly" with, but know I would never be super close to.  Others I have gotten super close to for a short time, but then we drifted apart:  yet, for my part, I would be happy to pick up where we left off if they were so inclined.

Still others never seemed that close when we were near by, but after one of us moved away - we found ourselves continuing to communicate regularly.

This is over simplistic, but what kind of friendship(s) do you have?  Friends that you ONLY see and talk to regularly and NEED to do so OR the kind that are strong enough to endure not speaking often, seeing one another less so, but still the bond remains strong?

Sure - it is hard to maintain a friendship that NEVER has any communication:  that is certainly true.  But the inverse does not necessarily follow:  the friendship does not have to be "doomed" forever unless one or both of you choose to let it die.

Fortunately for me, all my friends totally believe this is true! I've a couple of excellent friends I've known for decades that I speak to about 4 times a year and see far less. We send cards through the post office and enjoy the choosing and receiving of them. And I've friends right here in town that I've not seen for nearly a year because of Covid-19, have barely spoken to (we don't have a whole lot going on!) and our friendship is simply on pause and will restart this summer when we've all had our vaccines. Probably no parties until September or October though. Many people I know, including my husband and me, are taking the pandemic and stay home advice seriously. 

Probably, if they know each other and have fun whenever, if ever, they meet, I'd consider them friends.
