Can a 40 year old man restore and maintain a relationship with a woman that's 18 years younger if they have a past?

They've had a rocky, obsessive and addictive relationship. They have the kind of love that is impossible to stop. When he sees her he loses all control because he loves her so much and he even still gets nervous around her.

They got together when she was 20 and he was 38 and he swept her off her feet. After 2 months of dating he flew her out to california and drove her to museums, the prettiest beaches and piers and restaurants for her 21st bday.

He realized when he was traveling with her that he didn't want to spend another night sleeping away from her or being without her. They found an apartment and she moved out of her parents house. He paid for the apartment that had everything that she wanted a pool a jacuzzi and a view and the apartments were the nicest in town. They only lasted 6 months at the apartment because he got nervous, he felt like his love for her had to much control on him and made him vulnerable and he was terrified of this being it, the last woman before marriage. He loved dating and the thrill of meeting someone new and the attention. He had a wandering eye. They moved back with their parents and didn't live with each other anymore. They stayed friends and they both stayed up all night crying and missing each other, listening to sad songs, depressed, drinking. They hung out and stayed friends. Now she has a new bf but she still loves him and he loves her. They still talk the timing was off but they want a future. Hes never married, no kids, makes 50k/yr

People change.  They grow up, mature etc.  The landscape is no longer the same.  Never say never but avoid being obsessed and deluded.
