Should I return this PSU or nah?

Question

I found a really good deal for this 650 Watt Cougar GEX650 Gold Plus Modular PSU and I grabbed it before it sold out. The issue is that I'm hesitant to open it because it may not be for what I want in the long run. I'm looking at purchasing a 750 watt psu from either Cooler Master or Corsair which coast around $160-$170. Should I go trust in this PSU and hope for the best or should I do more research and pay more? I'll be using it for my ryzen 5000 series CPU and RTX 3070.

It's actually not a terrible power supply. Not the best but at least it's probably not going to catch on fire like the Gigabyte P850GM or P750GM. Cooler Master is sometimes hard to trust with their power supply units, but you can't go wrong with a Super Flower Leadex or Corsair RMx, RM, or HX unit.

The RTX 3080 and and RTX 3090 should be paired up with a 750w power supply, but the RTX 3070 and something like the Ryzen 9 can get away with a 650w power supply.

I don't think you'd regret trading in the Cougar for a Corsair RM750x. The RM750x is one of the best 750w units on the market. Also, if you ended up finding a good deal on a 3080ti in the future, the RM750x would cover the upgrade.

Really depends on what GPU you want to run either now or in future.  a 650 may not be enough if you want a high end GPU.

The power hungry devices are 1 the graphics card and the CPU.
You have not given the full identifiers of either  units but your 650W PSU will be good for your setup

check your psu sizing with an online app that is exactly for that purpose.

There are calculators on the net that help you decide how much watts PSU you need. So Google it and also see link. 650 watts is a decent size and may well be ample.
