You'd have to check with the manufacturer of your machine (gun) to find out if it will accommodate lace weight yarn. One popular model of tufting machine will handle crochet thread size 10 up to bulky yarn, so I'm sure lace weight yarn would work for the machine, though it might not be a practical choice for a rug you're going to walk on. It would be fine for an art piece.
