You use the word "an" if the following word starts with a vowel, or a vowel sound. Ex: an honest person

    an Orange.

    Two vowels never go together.

    A Bike    A-B

    AN Airplane  A-A

    a Dictionary    A-D

    an Encyclopedia.   A-E.

    a gelato    A-G

    an ice cream   A-I

If the word starts with a vowel,  airplane, Encyclopedia, Ice cream......then use you AN .

An orange. You use an when it’s in front of a word that has a vowel sound. Since orange is pronounced awe-inj, it begins with a vowel sound so an is used.

Look at honor. It starts with a consonant but it’s silent so you say an honor rather than a honor.
