Fish keeper since 1970. I stick with "old fashioned" methods, because they still work! Presently I have a 125 gallon with Silver Dollars Metynnis hypsauchen and Tinfoil Barbs, Barbus schwanefeldi. I have several smaller tanks upstairs. To support my hobby, I raise some livebearers such as swordtails, mollies and platies. I've been doing this since about 1980. I would suggest avoiding the chains for all fish as they carry more disease and are kept in poor conditions. Better to start with healthy fish. I'm big on regular water changes & not over stocking tanks. This is the key to fish keeping success. Thanks!

  • Will you help me educate PetSmart about metabolic bone disease?

On the website "Turtle Shop" they have a photo of a turtle with metabolic bone disease, a/k/a pyramiding. I hope people don't get the idea this is a photo of a healthy animal.

Here's more info on the disease: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=17&cat...

Here's the page with the deformed turtle:

  • Is it time for MM and VG to write a book?

Maybe moderate a forum someplace else? Maybe they already have? I know they know plenty. I probably know as much, but in no way have the writing skills or organization skills to write a book or even moderate a forum.

This is a great Q&A place, but a limited format. Forums are a great place to chat. Where can one find this caliber of poster in forums? I find a lot of petty flame wars in forums, whether it is for my hobbies or my work. This is a different situation. These people are an asset to Y! Answers.

  • Non-CDL trucks & drivers vs. CLD trucks & drivers: What do you think?

I find it kind of interesting what people without CDLs can drive...

    Light Duty non CDL

    Class 1 - 6,000 lb and under

    Class 2 - 6,001 to 10,000 lb

    Class 3 - 10,001 to 14,000 lb

Medium Duty non CDL unless air-over-hydraulic breaking system the Class C with air break endorsement. Class C is mostly used for medium duty buses.

    Class 4 - 14,001 to 16,000 lb

    Class 5 - 16,001 to 19,500 lb

    Class 6 - 19,501 to 26,000 lb

Heavy Duty Class B CDL, air brake endorsement if applicable

    Class 7 - 26,001 to 33,000 lb

    Class 8 - 33,001 lb and over

Tractor trailers over 26,000 lb are all Class 8 and require a Class A CDL.

Some manufacturers use hydraulic brakes in large vehicles to avoid the need for CDL. Some will put in a reduced capacity rear axle in a Class 7 truck to get it slightly under CDL weight.

I think this is very dangerous. I think all vehicles that weigh in as Class 6 and above (19,501 lbs) should require a CDL. It will add to costs of equipment and labor, but make roads safer for everyone.

  • Have you had any luck with Stress Zyme or Cycle?

I use Stress Zyme to get tanks cycled more quickly and to help shorten "mini-cycles" after partial water changes. I honestly believe they work, as my ammonia and nitrite levels go down fast and my nitrate levels go up pretty fast too and stabilize around 10 ppm. I go generally two weeks before doing a 20% water change. Before using these kinds of things, there was a possibility of fish loss after a cleaning, but it hasn't happened now in about a year.
