Is Hollywood on its way out?

Is Hollywood on its way out?

This may just be my age showing, but every film I've seen in the last 8 or 9 years just hasn't quite cut the mustard with me. Sure, there's been some films worth watching to pass the time, but does anyone feel that the movies are becoming as badly made and marketed as the music industry has become over the same period - a kind of throw away movie world with bad acting and too much gloss?

Update:

I can't even remember the film I last went to see and it was only a few months ago!

I feel the exact same way. What happened to the days when we had actors like Gene Kelly who actually worked for their pay checks? I think the 80's was the last era of real film making. I find myself very bored with movies now a-days, not to mention sick and tired of all of the remakes and recycled storylines. Does originality exist anymore?

And those who don't see a problem in today's movies is either in acute denial, still has Similac on their breath, or the taste of the modern movie-goer is severely diminishing.

So your saying that not many movies in the past 9 or 10 years have entertained you?

Not even the newer blockbusters like Basic Instinct 2, or Posiedon, or the one that just came out this weekend, Fast and Furious 3.

But seriously, Hollywood isn't going any where for a while. The quality is surely deteriotating but it's all business and marketing. All Hollywood needs to do is get you in, they could care less how you come out, satisfied or not. And as you can see, people are still going in to see movies with recent records being broken like X-Men 3.

Maybe you should consider a new pastime? :)

Hollywood or any film studio will make films that will make money.

Thats why sequels and of course remakes, will be made, as if the film can be summarised in like ten words or the original made money then of course make it.

Unfortunately, it is not simple I too have been very disappointed with many films I have seen with big budget effects (that look pretty bad) big name stars (that act like they are sleep walking carrying a tree) cute kids (that are so annoying) and a useless romantic subplot that shows little chemisty between the stars..

I could list the film or films in that category, but, oh, there would be so many....but if I had to name one, it is "The Island".

A film most men went to see or rented on DVD to see Scarlett Johanson naked, lets face it.

And why, why, does Robin Wllliams like Eddie Murphy keep trying the comedy genre. Now thats a question on its own.

In the past ten years several movies have been great...

    The patriot was inspiring

The passion of the Christ was wonderfully made

Princess Diaries had mean rolling on the floor

    X-men 3 was exhilarating

Fun with Dick and Jane was great

Dakota Fanning is a wonderful child actress

JIm Carry and Adam Sandler are hilarious

Mel Gibson is a great director

    and the list goes on

Can't believe you are compairing with the last decade of movies with those of the 70's and 80's...

ummm ok... don't even get me started

Hollywood isn't going anywhere anytime soon... while they should cut down on the language sexual content violence ect.. they are still producing great films and actors.

Ahhh the good old days syndrome.

Hollywood is not really getting worse, they have always put out more crap than gems. It is just that the crap is easily forgotten, so when we look back at yesteryear, we remember the four or five really good movies that came out that year, and forget the 25 okay movies and the 100 crap movies that came out the same year.

However, last year was not a very good year for movies. It is most likely just a slump, it does not meant that there will not the the four or five great movies this year.

I think the better question is where has the imagination in hollywood gone?

The films coming out of hollywood right now are all sequels and the ones that are any good have come from books, or ideas within the media.

One of the biggest problems right now is good ideas but they pull it off really badly.

In my opinion Hollywood is on its way out if they don't get knew writers the sort who actually make you really want to sit in the cinema and be thrilled again and again, like we used to be.

I agree - Hollywood isn't what it used to be, and they know it! It really irritated me that at the Oscar's everyone was "wah wah wah, nobody goes to the movies anymore, boohoo people are pirating our movies". Maybe if they weren't crappy and didn't cost an arm and a leg, I would go see a movie! Jeez. These people make MILLIONS of dollars per movie, whether crappy or not, and here they are, bitching at us. I can't even deal with it anymore.

As long as we have money Hollywood will never stop. Taking cash from the public is what Tinsel Town has been all about. I doubt it will ever be on its way out. Hollywood is only on it's way out with New Releases and Remixes.

way out? well, they've run out of ideas, thats for sure. they arent badly made, great special effects...but the content is horrible for most movies and they have resorted to remaking bad movies, which never turn out good, stealing from comicbooks, which isnt all that bad but never do them justice, or just putting out stupid films, *ahem* "stick it"....but if you want something funny to see, you can always count on vince vaughn!

i agree. its the same with the music industry too.im fed up with these "entertainers" getting shoved down our throats and put on the covers of magazines and ending up selling millions of albums through this hype. Most are talentless fools and that includes actors too!
