Is it safe to use a HSBC solo card on the internet??

My daughter (15) wants to buy things off the internet but I think that once I read that using a bank card is unsafe. Is this true or is it ok. She has a solo card or debit card from hsbc.

    I read (a while ago) that you should avoid using debit cards, credit cards should be used instead. I don't remember the exact reason, probably had to do with fraud protection being better for credit cards, but I haven't used my debit card online for that reason.
