Pattern for knitting scarf with persons name?

I would like to knit a scarf for someone who has been very helpful to me and as he is an extrovert type of guy I thought it would be nice to knit his name along the length of the scarf.

Does anyone know of a pattern to do this. I don't mind paying for it as it will save me time experimenting.

I have found a few patterns for knitted alphabets but I am not sure if they will be in proportion sideways since I will be knitting up from the short edge of the scarf.

Thanks Kacky but you are obviously not a knitter. Knitting from the long side would need to be done in sections, make the pattern very complicated and the scarf would not stretch in the right direction.

    Actually, even though I don't always agree, Kacky is quite knowledgable and there are a number of scarf patterns that are knit along the length of them.

    However, this is not the question you asked. You'd need to do a decent gauge swatch to determine how many rows there are in 4 inches of your knitting and then extrapolate this number to the number of inches of scarf you want (for example, if you have 28 rows in 4 inches of knitting, or 7 rows to the inch and want your scarf to be 72 inches long without fringe you need to knit 504 rows). Now you can determine the spacing of the letters by finding a chart for an alphabet where the height of the letters can be spaced well into your length. Figure on having at least 4 inches of your background color at each end, and 1 inch of background color between letters as well, so, minimally you have 28 rows of knitting background between the letters and the end, the remainder needs to be figured out based on the number of letters in his name. This means that for a very short name you need to either put the name on twice, once at each end (best done by knitting the two halves from the bottom up and grafting them at the center), which would keep them in proportion to the total scarf, or one long name and space it based on the total number of rows needed for the letters and spaces between them. Please remember that your letters on one side or the other will appear upside down knit this way.

    I think perhaps it might be best to put his initials only at one end like a monogram. I know of no patterns available that would incorporate a name any other way. Sorry.

    I thought when you knitted a scarf you did it from the narrow side.. So you can plot out the name on graph paper and change colors when you get that spot.. I crochet so I don't know much about knitting. I do filet crochet which I can do peoples names by plotting it out.

    I would think that if you knit from the long side, you can make the letters work.

    Or if you know someone with a knitting machine, this might be a good project for them.
