If somebody said you are extraordinary?

...doesn't that mean that you are more ordinary than other ordinary people, thus less special than average?

Update:

I know the meaning according to dictionary. Just weird that extraordinary means special (antonym of ordinary), when extra means more. E.g.

Extra large means more large (larger, I know it's grammatically incorrect) not smaller.

Extra cold means more cold (colder), not hotter.

Update 2:

Akma, you forgot to include encik Kongkang.

Nate, luar biasa ke terlebih biasa?

Update 3:

Beyond what is normal is not normally happen i.e. less common. As common in synonym to ordinary, that also means less ordinary.

How come less ordinary is also extra-ordinary?

(I'm actually in very bad mood today due to bladdy printer, that's how I came out with this q).

No. When they say you're extraordinary, it doesn't mean you're super-normal. It means you're out of the usual - something different - MORE than ordinary.

You stand out - you're not less special. Instead, you're more special. It can mean that you are interesting or weird! Depend on what the person mean.

    Dictionary Definition:

    ex⋅traor⋅di⋅nar⋅y

    –adjective

    1. BEYOND what is usual, ordinary, regular, or established: extraordinary costs.

    2. exceptional in character, amount, extent, degree, etc.; noteworthy; remarkable: extraordinary speed; an extraordinary man.

    3. (of an official, employee, etc.) outside of or additional to the ordinary staff; having a special, often temporary task or responsibility: minister extraordinary and plenipotentiary.

    ---

Think of the word "extraterrestrial." It means like the word "alien." In English, terrestrial means relating to Earth, but the prefix "extra-" change the meaning to "beyond the Earth" - like an alien!

Extra is connected to word, not a separate adjective.

It is that way because sometimes, there are words that mean the same thing - we call meaning "denotation," but one word may have a different HIDDEN meaning - it feels different. We call that "connotation."

For example: the words big and enormous. They both mean large, but one feels a lot different than the other one.

It could be either way. Extraordinarily notorious in a negative way or extraordinarily good, positively.

i think we use "extra" in certain things because of the "infinity" factor.
