How deep is the River Hudson where the plane went in?

Perhaps our American friends would take pity on a curious Brit. I have followed the story of the plane crash with interest, and much admiration of the pilot. I can't find any information on the internet or in our many newspapers here as to how deep the Hudson is at the area the plane went in. Anybody either know how deep, or else where I can find out?

The River Hudson's depth at the point in question is actually between 30 and 50 feet deep. The river bottom is very muddy and murky and no actual measurement was taken due both to this and the fact that it was not an important factor relative to getting all the passengers away safely. Due to the river currents the bottom is not conveniently cut out to present a flat image. It is very rutted and dips irregularly; because the plane has a lengthy fuselage and broad wingspan a definitive depth of the water becomes difficult because there is not a sole point of measurement.

I think fairly deep, that is the area a lot of the cruise ships dock. Also not too far from the 911 site. Go on the Internet and type in Hudson River, New York City. I am also a Brit, now living in Canada. Hope this helps.

. How does this airplane event compare even close to event of 9/11??? Thank God that all survived? Yes. . . .But a "miracle"? No. Birds caught in plane engine caused plane to crash. Terrorists caused planes to crash into buildings on 9/11. How can you compare the two?!!! Plane crashing in water is different from plane crashing into towering building. People can more-so survive water crash more than they can building crash. The article you noted revealed the following . . . ...Two birds were "caught up" in the planes engine during flight. ...Due to the birds it effected the plane's engines. ...The pilot is 58 years old and is an experienced and skilled pilot for 29 years with one airline. ...The plane was directed to the water due to the skill and experience of the pilot. Those facts gathered together, even with all passengers surviving, how does that qualify as being a "miracle"? A "miracle" because the event occurred within days of President Elect Obama's inauguration? That this event occurred when and where it did does not qualify it to being a "miracle" and certainly it's not even close to circumstances of tragic 9/11 event. .

Exactly 54 feet. This doesn't count the mud and sediment lining the riverbed, of course.

Why is it important to know how deep the river is? I would like to know how many fish were squashed when the plane hit the water......
