why does a freewiew hard drive freeze?

its a top of the range Panasonic DVD recorder & when on standby i sometimes have to hold the on button down foe 10 seconds to unfreeze it.................

mine forgets to record, they not too good
i thinks its like a computer hard drive they do freeze
my parents sky box takes a while to come on, its loading
