I've had similar problems with my beemer. I can only explain this for windows computers.
When connected to the external screen/tv/beamer/... press windows-icon-button + P, a small window will pop-up and let you select between 4 stances:
-first one ignores the external display.
-second one duplicates the screen to the other display, mostly trying to fit a decent screen size for -both monitors with the same resolution, which makes this sometimes not a good option to do.
-third one keeps the displays resolution but uses the external monitor as an extension of your other screen.
- Fourth one makes it possible to use to external monitor as the main screen and tries to fit the resolution to that monitor, this is mostly the best resolution I get.
While switching and trying these methods, you can always switch the resolution to a size of choice in the resolution tab in your control Panel.
If this doesn't work it'll probably be your tv settings, also try to check these out too.
Hope this helps
