What kind of gun do I need to hunt hogs and deer?

Thinking about getting into hunting this year and wanted to be properly geared up; rifle or shotgun?

Will your shots be at closer ranges?.... Meaning - Do you live in a part of the country where there are not a lot of wide open spaces?.... If so then consider a rifle chambered in 30/30.... A Marlin 336 would be a decent choice....

Or do you live in an area with wide open spaces like many states out west?.... If so then surely look over a bolt action rifle chambered in .308...... The Remington 700, Savage rifles with accutrigger or a Ruger M77 would be a decent choice........

Either. It will depend on what the law in your state says, and what the conditions in which you'll be hunting are.

If you're only going to be doing short hunts, say out to about 100 yards, a shotgun with slugs will suffice for both deer and hogs. That's especially true in heavily wooded areas and in states where hunting big game with rifles is prohibited.

However, if you intend to take shots longer than about 100 yards, a good choice would be a bolt action rifle in .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, or .30-06 Springfield. These four are all very common cartridges that are reasonably inexpensive and all have adequate energy to take both deer and hogs, provided you select a cartridge with the proper bullet weight and construction. A soft point bullet of around 100 grains is a wise choice for .243 Win, a 130 grain soft point or heavier for .270 Win, and 150+ for .308 Win and .30-06 is a good option. There are other choices that work well, too, but those are basic suggestions.

August and Metro have the right direction;it does depend on the state if you can use rifle or shotgun (Illinois,Iowa,Ohio areas for example). I'm not a big fan of 243 for deer or hogs anymore;even with 95 or 100 grain bullets you have very little margin in regards to quartering shots or extended ranges-yeah you might get away with it but a 270,308,30-06 are better options hands down. Not a huge fan of 30-30 either, even if you KNOW every shot is going to be at 150 yards or less you are still handicapping yourself on energy and bullet selections (even taking Hornady LeverRevolution ammo into consideration). I use "premium" bullets because I reload and have those options, but at the very least you want Rem Core Lokt or Federal Fusion for deer and hogs;hogs can have a lot of mass and padding so having a slightly more robust bullet design gets you proper penetration over something like a cheap cup & core bullet. Other considerations is if you might be hunting bear or elk at some point down the road where a 270 is enough with a "premium" bullet like a Nosler Accu-Bond,Barnes TSX or similar.

In those states/areas where shotguns are required a 12 gauge with slug loads will get you performance to 100 yards, maybe more if you have a rifled barrel. Luckily I'm out west where 30-06 and 7mm Rem Mag are the most common rounds.

If it is legal to use a rifle where you plan to hunt, I would use a rifle. Rifles are far superior to shotguns for deer and hog hunting. I would get a Rem 700 in .243, .30-06, or .308.

Well your a bit late on the deer season most states the drawings for tags have already taken place and many zones the seasons have already gotten under way so your choices to where you can hunt will be affected. Also if you don't have a hunting license or never had one you will need to take a hunter safety course first. You can get all that info from your states fish and game department

Now as for gun that will take both deer and hogs the venerable 30-06 will accomplish that task quite well as it has taken more north american game then just about any other round. What you might also consider is archery as that will expand your hunting seasons. For a bow to hunt deer it should be at least 40lbs draw weight. For hog 60-70lbs is desired.

The best deer rifle caliber in my opinion is the .308 Winchester. All the calibers you have listed will work although the 9mm should not be used for animals that large. If you are looking for a good rifle then the bolt action is the best.

If you are going to hunt wild hogs then you are going to want a lever action or semi auto. 30/30 lever is what I use - many use the 308 or 223 semi.

    Marlin 30/30 lever action
