Can we use "by" instead of "in" in the following sentence?

Sentence: He was injured in a car accident.

If not, what is the reason?

    He was injured becomes the action and in a car accident determines where the action occurred. in order to use by, u must rephrase the sentence as follows: He was injured by a car in an accident. By in this context explains what injured the person.

    He was injured in a car accident (in +location)

    He was injured in the groin. (in + body part).

    He was injured by a car. (passive sentence - car is the agent of the action) = The car injured him.

    He was injured by a cricket ball. = The cricket ball injured him.

    He was injured by his neighbour. = His neighbour injured him .

    by is an adverb.Adding to the "doing".Where as in is an adjective "describing" the noun or subject which is "the accident".
